The article deals with the provision of Chelyabinsk region population with socially important food products. The relevance of the problem is determined by the current state of social and economic development of the Russian Federation as a whole and its constituent entities including Chelyabinsk region. The necessity to provide high level of food products selfsufficiency, and to reduce import substitution especially in the group of socially important food products is marked as an important strategic objective of economics development in the Russian Federation in the Doctrine of food safety of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2010 as well as other programs and documents of a federal and regional stage.The authors consider basic factors characterizing the level of production and supply of major groups of socially important food products in Chelyabinsk region including food of plant and animal origin. The role and contribution of the Ural and Chelyabinsk regions to the all-Russian production of socially-important food products of plant and animal origin are revealed. The analysis of current state, retrospective dynamics and prospects for the provision of the population in the region with food products is given.The article highlights the aspect of the level of supply of major groups of socially important food products by the population in the Ural and Chelyabinsk region, the dynamics of such factors in terms of separate food product items is shown.The analysis of statistical data allows the authors to evaluate current state and prospects of social and economic development of the Ural Federal District as a whole and basic constituent prospects in particular. Basic strategic lines to increase the level of import substitution of regional food market and regulation of food production of the region are revealed.
