In the second half of the 13th century, small- brother secluded monasteries began to appear outside of cities and populated areas on the territory of the Novgorod land. Monasteries of the Russian North appear. By the 15th century, the number of such monasteries was twice as large as that of city and suburban monasteries. In the 16th century, there were one and a half times more secluded monasteries than city monasteries. The peculiarity of small monasteries were small communities of 10 or 12 monks. Such monasteries did not strive to obtain large lands with dependent peasants (“acquisition, which is by violence of other people’s labors”). They provided themselves with the labor of their hands or were fed by voluntary alms, and their internal monastic life had an ascetic orientation. In the presented article, the author answers the question: How did the monks of such monasteries pray? How were their services and cell rules conducted?
