The article is devoted to the problem of the discovery of “Byzantism” in Russian socio- political thought of the early 19th century. The author explores some aspects of the biography and “Notes” of a participant in the Second Archipelagic Expedition of Admiral D. N. Senyavin, Lieutenant Commander Bronevsky. Conclusions are drawn about the origin of the reception of “Byzantism” in the era of Peter the Great, about the significance of Catherine the Great’s “Greek Project” for awakening interest in Greek- Byzantine history, about the state of the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century, about the influence of the “Notes” on Russian military thought in the early 20th century.
