Computer games in teaching history

The study discusses the opportunities for computer games in history education. The author classifies history-themed games into genres, reveals their advantages and disadvantages as a learning tool, and determines several general principles and techniques for using computer games when teaching history. It is concluded that history-themed video games are of great value to teachers of history. On the one hand, they can be used as a kind of laboratory for modeling historical events and processes to develop students’ historical thinking with clear ideas about cause-effect relationships and multivariate history. On the other hand, computer games can serve as a visual guide with a colorful 3D visualization of artifacts of different nations from different eras.
