The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the concept of a religious symbol and the definition of its place in the theological system of the prominent Protestant theologian of the 20th century Paul Tillich. It shows how a religious symbol is connected with Tillich’s method of correlation, provides various characteristics of the symbol, and examines the continuity of the concept of a religious symbol with the Lutheran theological tradition. In doing so, it not only analyzes Tillich’s vision of the symbol, but also demonstrates how far he has moved away from Lutheran ideas about it.
