Based on the analysis of Vietnamese archival sources, Soviet (Russian) and American historiography, the goals of the USSR and the PRC in the Vietnamese revolution and the causes of disagreements between them about the process of peaceful settlement of the Vietnam war are revealed. The paper shows how the leadership of the DRV used a hidden conflict between the two powers to achieve their goals, and that it was Soviet-Chinese contradictions that became the basis for a better version of a peace agreement with the United States.
