As part of the study of the problem of ensuring the reliability of professional activities, it can be argued that the degree of formation of the personality qualities of future specialists in the transport industry affects the level of self-regulation in extreme situations. The novelty of the study is conditioned by the object of study and the complex of applied methods (Questionnaire for the diagnosis of personal features of professional I.G. Senin, V.E. Orel; Coping strategies of R. Lazarus; Test for monotone resistance of personality of N.P. Fetiskin in adaptation of A.E. Petrosyan; Diagnosis of the level of anxiety, rigidity and extroversion of D. Mawdsley). The object of the study is the workers of locomotive crews of passenger and freight traffic. Differences between the indicators of personality traits in passenger and freight locomotive drivers were revealed. No differences were found between the indicators of coping strategies. Only one difference was identified between the indicators - in terms of activity preference: passenger train drivers’ assistants are more mon-otone-resistant when performing professional activities than freight train drivers’ assistants.
