Cosmological assessment of the conditions of the incarnation. Part 2

Бесплатный доступ

In this part of the paper we continue to discuss those cosmological conditions which follow from the acceptance of the Incarnation as a typologically central event in the history of salvation. In particular, one discusses the sense of the idea of “deep incarnation” in the context of modern views about the universe. It is argued that this idea is deeply problematic because of the principal unobservability of the bulk of cosmic matter. It is then the idea of “deep incarnation” which is assessed from an Orthodox theological point of view as considerably deviating from the teaching on deification as a personal achievement in man’s ascent to God. Correspondingly, one doubts the idea of multiple incarnations. One argues that the “deep incarnation” is de facto an idea of the universality of man in the universe in the archetype of Christ, so that “deep incarnation” entails “deep anthropology” that cannot be justified on the grounds of modern cosmology.
