The article is devoted to the cultural and philosophic substantiation of the development of the concept of capitalism. The author reconstructs the Marie-Elisabeth Hilger's thesis on the conceptual history of capitalism represented in Reinhart Koselleck's Lexicon. The article reveals the key features of development and formation of the term capitalism - from the term used by journalists as an antonym of socialism, to the philosophic concept which serves as the basis of the New European type of rationality. The cultural and philosophic interpretation of the development of the capitalism concept makes it the key notion for the philosophic discourse and allows leaving the scope of this phenomenon interpretation in terms of economic theory. The main thesis of the article is the statement that Marx never used the concept of capitalism whereas Sombart is considered as the philosopher who developed this concept in the context of humanities.
