This article analyzes the concept of “legitimacy” within the context of library and information activities. It examines the core components of a library’s legitimacy as a social institution, as well as its role and position in modern society. The study investigates library legitimation mechanisms designed to enhance social trust. Particular attention is given to shaping a positive public perception of libraries and strengthening their authority by satisfying users’ information needs. Furthermore, the article addresses the terminological analysis of “legitimacy” and its derivatives within library science. Working definitions are proposed for the concepts of “information legitimacy,” “library legitimacy,” and “library legitimation mechanisms.”
