Personal values of Chinese students: gender differences

The article discusses the personal values of Chinese students in the context of gender differences. The theoretical substantiation of differences in value priorities of modern young men and women is given. The author reviews the data of the empirical research, in the course of which 300 Chinese students were interviewed. Significant differences in value hierarchy of Chinese girls and boys have been found. For girls the most important value priorities are focused on the well-being of other people, while for boys such values as independence, achievement, power, and security are more important. The author associates the differences found with the influence of the gender roles typical for the traditional culture of China.
