In the article the main approaches to the definition of the functions of a social institution or a social phenomenon, which undoubtedly applies the law. Stresses that, in relation to the definition of the functions of law at the present time the scientific community has developed an integrated understanding of the unity of two issues: a) role (appointment) of the rights in society as a means of system formation; b) the main directions of its impact on social relations. When this function rights can only be seen as a progressive, positive legal effect, and all negative, conservative, etc. influence and their results should be considered as dysfunction.
