The dramatic fate and post-soviet revival of the Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy in recent years are of great interest historians. This article discusses the history of the monastery as a protected cultural heritage sites in the capital 1917-1991. This aspect still remained outside the field of view of researchers, but it was he who was fundamental to the revival of the monastery. From the standpoint of the author analyzes the problems microstorie conservation of the architectural complex of Martha and Mary Convent in several contexts: the general socio-political situation of the Soviet state, the history of the protection of a public monuments of the capital and the evolution of the concept of cultural heritage protection of the individual architectural works to integrated urban development approach to the conservation of monuments material culture.
