The article highlights the importance of a discursive approach to translation in general, and to the implementation of pre-translation analysis in particular. In contrast to the traditional approach which limits pre-translation mostly to getting external information about the author, the discursive approach helps to reveal the author's cognitive mechanism in perception of reality via discourse descriptors. The given analysis implements J. Potter’s and M. Weatherell’s recommendations (1987) and is illustrated by I. Klyukanov’s lyrics. The analysis of metaphorical means and their sourcegoal objects provides grouping oftwo basic interpretive repertoires - metalanguage metaphor as the author's scientificoriented mind representation, and ethno-cultural metaphor as the author's daily mind perception.
