This article addresses several key questions on the role of metaphors in language acquisition and teaching. Why metaphors should be used in foreign language teaching and learning? And, why is it important and necessary to learn metaphors immediately from the beginning and not later when a higher language competency has been reached? These questions are discussed in the context of different metaphor theories. Which concept of metaphors is most suitable for teaching and learning a foreign language? How can metaphors be identified in foreign language lessons? In addition, as metaphors often reflect the cultural context, how can they facilitate the development of intercultural competences? In particular, what does metaphoric competence mean and how can it be taught in the classroom?
