Марафонская битва - значимое событие в истории Афин. В представленной работе она рассматривается как феномен социальной памяти - событие, память о котором передавалась последующим поколениям. В данном случае социальная память понимается как сохранение и передача значимой информации. Это было связано с сооружением трофеев, мемориалов погибших воинов и т.п. - как на месте сражения (места памяти»), так и за его пределами. В то же время сохранение памяти о Марафонской битве сопровождалось искажениями и исключением из ее описания некоторых значимых элементов, т.е. тем, что нередко называют «забвением». В работе высказывается мысль, что в процессе сохранения и передачи информации складывается определенная система образов и представлений (паттерн), который определяет ее восприятие. То, что не укладывается в эту систему (паттерн) чаще всего не принимается во внимание.
