The article describes the methodical aspects of teaching a course where geographic information systems (GIS) are studied. It examines the division of subjects related to information technologies while implementing the two-level model of higher education (bachelor's degree and master's degree programs). It is noted that the course on Geographic Information Systems is subdivided into four stages. They include lectures, workshops, independent work (development of GIS-project), and examination. The study provides an example of introducing geographic content into teachers training abroad. The paper reveals the results of research projects carried out by students during the GIS course and after its completion. The author’s methods used in teaching subjects related to geographic information systems demonstrate the effective learning and show excellent results when solving applied problems. The application of these methods is to speed up the GIS introduction into learning process as their dissemination in education lags behind the development of GIS-technologies and products.
