Mesenchymal stromal cells are one of the main components of hemopoietic niche. Despite numerous studies on the phenotype and differentiation of MSCs in the bone marrow (BM), our knowledge on their functioning in vivo especially on the MSC role in tumor microenvironment is limited. The phenotypic characteristics of MSC CM, issues of their heterogeneity and hierarchy, as well as their role in the formation of the tumor microenvironment are discussed.
