Weltanschauung dilemmas of the South Korean society in frame of arthouse movie narratives

The article deals with the methodology and methods of using films of arthouse cinema as a vehicle for teaching deep understanding about cultural and social transformations brought into being by meta processess of globalization and mediatization of societies. The author theorizes mediatizated South Korean art house cinema through an analysis of its distinguishing features, intertextuality and hybridity. Using sociological theory of meditization of society by Stig Hjarvard, the paper shows how the media logic and grammar of mediatized art house cinema, particulary South Korean case, transforms the global public discourses on culture, religion and ideology. Providing a detailed analysis of the movie "Thirst" of the popular South Korean auteur Pak Chan Wook, the author demonstrates the algorithms for the preparation of films in the framework of lectures and gives an example of the construction of seminar discussions of transnational and national cultural components of a mediatizated South Korean art house cinema. The text proposes the consideration of the results of discourse analysis and content analysis of the movie "Thirst". The main focus of the analysis is the investiagation of the ideological dilemmas of South Korean society. In the perspective of introducing this educational innovation, the author proposes a detailed review of topics for practical exercises, lined up on the main semantic components of the movie’s narrative.
