The most popular urban transport structure is considered in the article from the point of view of the conditions that ensure its role as an actual means of transportation. The solution of this task became possible thanks to a comprehensive study of the metalanguage of the Moscow Metro in the framework of communication studies and semiotics. The authors study the original classification of language tools used in navigation and propose to introduce the concept of “metrolanguage”. The analysis of verbal and non verbal ways of informing, color and object symbols, sound and visual series is proposed. The versatility of the navigation language, along with the technological component, ensures the safety and comfort of communication for a large mass of users, although the metro, like any type of transport, belongs to the high risk zone. Consideration of navigation strategies in the unity of narrative and background semiotics allows us to conclude about their positive communicative functionality. Transport and urban development projects of megacities aimed at realizing the existential possibilities of mass communications actualize the further development of the Subway.
