Doublet names in the toponymic system of the Ludic Onega lake area

The article studies the doublet or different names of the same or related objects to show the lability of the toposystem, which has been usually considered stable. The potential of this dynamism is revealed both for historical linguistics and ethno-historical research. The author analyzes the reasons for such mobility, including the influx of new population due to the economic development of the territory. The toponymic materials from Onega Lake area, including both field materials and toponyms extracted from historical sources starting with the XVI century, were used for analysis. Three cases of “doublets” were studied: 1) the concurrent existence of a Karelian toponym and a Russian toponym not being the translation of the original Karelian word (Kar. Kendärv - Russ. Konchezero); 2) the change of a toponym throughout the documented history (Pertozero - Vikshozero); and 3) the linking of two multilingual names of territorially adjacent objects, which reflect the common motive of their occurrence (Povezha -Koshtomozero), which suggests one of the names to be the translation of the other. The analysis was based on the methods of comparative historical linguistics, as well as on a wide range of toponymic techniques.
