The new data on stone age of Uzbekistan: the Gyshtsai-1 workshop-camp in the Akhangaran river valley

Free access

Akhangaran River basin is one of the most comfortable places to Paleolithic human inhabitance at the territory of modern Uzbekistan. A representative group of the Stone Age objects is located in the south eastern slope of the Chatkal Ridge. On the right bank of the river. The workshop-camp Gyshtsay-1 is situated on the right bank of the Tashsai River near the flint outcrops. The surface material were collected in 1962. As a result, researchers divided two complexes in this assemblage: Upper Paleolithic and Neolithic. In addition, the singulat Mousterian forms were found. The presence of buried Paleolithic artifacts was fixed in 2013, and the exploratory cleaning was realized at the site in 2015. Analysis of stratigraphy showed that in the context of Gyshtsaya-1 (cl. 1-4) reflects the processes of physical and chemical weathering Paleogene limestones with further demolition of slope processes. The stratigraphic analysis shew that Gyshtsai-1 profile reflects the processes of physicochemical weathering of Paleogene limestone with his further removing by slope processes. The brown sandy loam, accumulated as a loess cover, participates in structure of the layer 2. The denudation hiatuses is absent that suppose the relative impermanence of the deposit accumulation. Previously, they were related to the Pleistocene, the dating of sediments from sublayer 2.2 will give the more exact age Stone artifacts are distributed in the cross-section equally. Their position in the layer repeats the typical situation of nearby objects with displaced materials. Contrary to previous estimates, the character of the Gyshtsaya-1 stone industry purpose to relate the site to Final stages of the Stone Age. Age of materials can be preliminary determined as young as 35-30 kyr, and further research of this object will help to reduce this range.
