The roots of Greek philosophy are outside of the Greek world – this position in modern historical and philosophical science has become almost mainstream. However, the question about the culture, which influenced most of all on the formation of Greek philosophy and founded Western European thinking, is still open. This article is devoted to the analysis of a number of concepts that appeared in the Russian-language philosophical literature of the early 21st century within the framework of the discussion that has been going on between the representatives of the autochthonous and adoptive hypotheses of the origin of Greek philosophy for more than a century. It includes A.O. Bolshakov, V.V. Emelyanov, V.V. Zhdanov, M.N. Volf, I.N. Rassokha. The acuteness of this discussion is due to the understanding that the question of the origin of philosophy is a question of the origins of the European civilization itself, and, consequently, of its further historical destinies. According to the author, the point of view of the supporters of the Indo-European influence is the most well argued, but its character, forms and direction remain a subject of controversy.
