About new document regarding state language policy “On the approval of the fundamentals of the state language policy of the Russian Federation”

Any country, to one degree or another, is characterized by officially expressed attention to the language(s), which is the main means of communication for its citizens. A complex and multifaceted set of activities, usually referred to by the term ‘language policy’, includes the development of guidance documents designed to regulate its main areas. A sovereign state, having constitutionally established the national language of a constitutionally state-forming people in the most important status, justifiably considers it its duty to pursue a language policy aimed at supporting, protecting and strengthening the position of this language. Of course, these steps by the authorities affect areas of a very wide range, since activity of citizens is practically impossible without verbal communication. Therefore, official documents that manifest the intentions of the state in the field of language policy are extremely important for the whole society and should be publicly known. The latest evidence of the state’s attention to the problems of the functioning of the Russian language is the Foundations of the state language policy of the Russian Federation. The need to adopt such a document has been brewing for the past two or three decades, and finally it appeared in July 2025. There is no doubt about the high significance of this document and its special value for native speakers of the Russian language. However, some formulations of this text may not seem quite perfect. They serve as the subject for consideration in the article.
