About Osip Mandelshtam's translations from Max Barthel

The article deals with poor explored translations of Mandelshtam (from M. Barthel). When comparing the original and translated texts we recognize and analyze essential differences for understanding the translation purposes of Mandelstam. We found five basic translation strategies of Mandelstam, each of them is illustrated with examples: enrichment and complication of Barthel's imagery, partial removal of religious metaphors, strengthening of the revolutionary symbolism, "russification" of the translated text and saturation of translated texts by Mandelshtam’s imagery.
