The role of hedging in EAP teaching at high educational institutions

The article considers the issue of the hedging role in EAP teaching at higher educational institutions. The paper aims to describe the connection of speech dialogicality with hedging, the complexity of the latter and the importance of studying it at a university. The attempt is made to study hedging as a multifaceted phenomenon, which is a device of speech dialogization, expressed by linguistic means (lexical-grammatical, stylistic etc.). A special attention is paid to the importance of teaching masters of higher educational institutions to use hedging within EAP (English as a Medium of Instruction) courses, particularly, in written scientific speech with the aim of improving students’ professional competence exercised within the framework of cross-cultural competency. The relevance of the present article is emphasized by special attention to the knowledge and skills of senior students to use hedging in interpreting the perceived meanings in written scientific speech of Anglo-Saxon linguoculture.
