The article delves into the analysis of the concept of self-discipline and its relationship with various models of self-regulation. It examines domestic concepts of conscious self-regulation proposed by V.I. Morosanova and the hierarchical model developed by D.A. Leontiev. The key functions of self-regulation and the phenomena in which they manifest are discussed. The article notes a tendency in English-language literature to equate self-discipline with self-control. The dual model of discipline proposed by L.Ya. Dorfman, A.V. Dubrovsky, A.P. Andrunik, E.A. Tsariyev, and V.N. Lyadov is studied, which elaborates on the notions of external and internal discipline. The inhibiting and initiating functions of self-control are discussed, as well as the concept of external and internal self-discipline, which facilitates a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying effective management of one’s behavior and emotions. The article traces the line of social conditioning in the formation of self-discipline, referencing the works of L.S. Vygotsky and M. Foucault. It demonstrates the potential to understand self-discipline as a form of meaningful regulation of an individual's activities, grounded in the significant values of society. The usefulness of the presented theoretical models for the development of applied research is substantiated.
