Objective and Subjective Assessment of Long and Extra-Long Terms of Imprisonment

The article is devoted to understanding the specific meanings of long and extra-long periods in criminal law. The authoridentifies possible options for sentencing in the form of imprisonment in accordance with current legislation. The importance of the term category for punishments related to isolation from society is substantiated. There are two sides to the assessment of the length of the term of imprisonment — objective and subjective. Taking into account the analysis of the previously proposed classification options, we propose our own variation of the definition of long and ultra-long terms of imprisonment. The main criteria are the category of crimes and the form of guilt. The author also examines the impact of long and ultra-long sentences on the personality of a convicted person, highlights the main negative transformations.
