The present study identifies problems of education determined by introduction of the second foreign language as a new subject in some non-linguistic departments of arts and humanities universities. The author makes an attempt to justify from a scientific standpoint the choice of Spanish as the second foreign language for trilingual students of non-linguistic departments of arts and humanities universities beginning to study the second foreign language. Rationale for choosing Spanish as a second foreign language is based on the experimental data and comprehensive psychological and methodological analysis of the artificial subordinate trilingualism in teaching reading in the second foreign language to students of non-linguistic departments of arts and humanities universities. The problem of choosing Spanish for the role of a second foreign language is associated in the article with the concept of approximative system. According to the author, its implementation at the initial stage of learning, when the most effective method of mastering language material is comparison, plays a decisive motivational role for the student, and helps the teacher to form a multilingual personality of the learner.
