The article deals with the social status of traders of the regional city markets, particularly their level of education. Among the scholars studying traders of markets. V. I. Ilyin and M. A. Ilyina occupy an important place. They conducted a study of a market in Syktyvkar and concluded that traders are characterised by high intellectual potential. Close attention is paid to the interpretation of the author's sociological survey data. Among workers of markets people aged 45-49 with high education dominate. Among the traders who work at the market for less than 1 year, the share of persons with the higher education is lower than among respondents with a longer work term. It is almost impossible to determine the extent of the influence of education on the status of market traders, because the representatives of this group is characterised by an extremely diverse composition by level of education.
