The “sensible world” images of N. A. Zabolotsky in English translation

Using the poems “The White Night” and “Football” one of the most important components of Zabolotsky poetry - the “sensible world” and its peculiarity in English translation (translator C.Fortune) is considered. According to Zabolotsky, a rational order of being is possible only in the combination of sensual contemplation with the intellect. The world sensized is irrational and absurd. It is the “sensible world” of the Russian poet and its image representations that are the most difficult to understand for translators, that is explained by the philosophical saturation of Zabolotsky''s poetry, and the difficulty of understanding its ontological and epistemological foundations even for native speakers. Therefore, C.Fortune often tries to explain rationally to the English-speaking reader Zabolotsky’s alogisms and absurdities, adapting and simplifying for these purposes the imagery and means of expressiveness used by the Russian poet. Sometimes the translator misunderstands the meanings of Zabolotsky''s images, as, for example, in the case of “Elagin” (Yelagin Island), interpreted by C. Fortune as the surname (Elagin). Conclusion: The absence of scientific reflection on the translations of Zabolotsky''s texts in modern Philology allows us to talk about considerable perspective in this field of studies. The versatility of the poet, the complexity of his artistic world and his ambiguous perception by foreign readers give an interesting material for further study of the topic.
