The competence-based approach allows us to see the results of the educational process in terms of requirements of the society, labour market and specific expectations of employers as well. The success in the technical sphere of human activity is impossible without broad mathematical training providing adaptability to continuously changing types of tasks. One of the main pre-conditions of the formation of mathematical culture is the introduction of mathematical education into the system of students’ personal values. The tasks which we set while studying mathematics, should not be only understood, but also accepted by a person, i.e. correlated to his or her motivational sphere as emotions play a very important part in our intellectual activity. The result of person’s intellectual activity can be the purpose of his or her actions; therefore, it is very important to coordinate the purposes of a teacher with those of a student at each stage of training. In the article the results of the experiment aimed at revealing the correspondence of the purposes of students’ and school-leavers’ mathematical education with the purposes put forward by scientific and pedagogical community are described. The attempt to analyze the reasons of discordance of these purposes and to find the ways of constructive interaction in achieving our main goal - the formation of steady motivation to study mathematics at a higher educational institution, is made.
