Experience of studying the history of the language with the ideographic type of writing in western and Chinese linguistics

The article presents a brief overview of the works revealing the experience of studying the history of a language with an ideographic type of writing in Western and Chinese linguistics. We have described the prerequisites, and particularities of the first works on the history of the Chinese language, carried out by European and Chinese linguists. It is noted that at the initial stage of the development of a diachronic approach to studying the language with an ideographic type of writing, where a phonetic component is not given, the works were devoted to the changes that the phonetic system underwent. The article also emphasizes that the grammatical subsystem of the Chinese language became an object of study of diachronic linguistics only in the second half of the 20th century. In conclusion, we have presented the works of mainly Chinese linguists, in which the evolution of the Chinese language system can be traced at all its levels
