The article is devoted to the methodology validation and comparative lexico-statistical and contextological analysis of the Russian verbs with the meanings ‘to begin’, ‘to continue’ and ‘to stop’ associated with the category of phaseness and characterized by specific lexical collocations in novels by I.S. Turgenev. Based on interpreting the context of the most frequent lexical bigrams comprising the verbs in question, which were used by other writers of the 19th century (F.M. Dostoevsky, A.P. Chekhov, L.N. Tolstoy, I.A. Goncharov), we have come to the conclusion on the individual specificity of this semantic category manifested in the works by I.S. Turgenev. In particular, the individual authorial contexts present phaseness in Turgenev’s idiostyle as the most complete category (all three stages are shown); it is analytically expressed and closely associated with the sphere of speech. It is stated that the structural and semantic division of speech, which is observed in Turgenev’s novels, reflects his close attention to every moment of speech especially to its initial phase. Several important proper characteristics of speech peculiar to the personal Turgenev’s style (those of inner feelings and emotions of a person expressed in his speech, utterance speed, unexpected interruptions or restarts in the flow of speech, its excessive duration) have been identified due to its explicit division into stages. The internal correlation between the concepts of speech, thought and motion which is semantically important for the purpose of expressing the category in question has been specified.
