The article deals with the issues of the radical typological reorganization in the system of the modern English language, namely its tendency to acquire the characteristics of isolating and agglutinative languages. The system of the American English language, its vowel and consonant phonological patterns, syllabication, and the phonetic pattern of words are examined. The status of American English as compared to British English is discussed. The issue of the relationship between the mechanisms of perception of a "native" and "accented" word is discussed based on the data of study on perception of American and British words programmes by American and British listeners. The conclusion is made about similarities and differences in the perception mechanisms of the two variants of the English language and the characteristics of its system in terms of the perceptual aspect.
