This paper reveals the features of the initiative development in primary school age. The initiative is one of the key and socially significant personality traits that is in great demand at the modern stage of society development, where independence and leadership qualities, the ability to quickly navigate the event and information flow are valued. Researches by psychologists and teachers show that in order to take the initiative, students need to understand the current situation in which they have to act themselves, correctly navigate it and be able to evaluate it; develop an action plan; make a decision about independent action and take responsibility for it. Meanwhile, the development of the initiative in primary school is rarely the focus of teachers' attention, including in teaching such a subject as the visual arts. But it can be a creative way for the formation of the initiative, the pupil becoming not only as an object but as an active subject of training. The study conducted in one of the schools of the Krasnoyarsk Territory demonstrates an example of the development of the initiative of students in the work on an art project. The experiment shows significant results in the formation of the student's personal qualities and can be introduced into the practice of teaching artistic subjects.
