The problems of increasing the effectiveness of forensic methods for investigating environmental crimes, in particular crimes related to negative impacts on water bodies, is an urgent area of scientific discussion. The article discusses the need to expand such a methodology by including provisions on ways to identify such illegal acts. Based on the monitoring, measures have been proposed to integrate the use of media resources and social networks in the investigator's activities as tools for finding information about water pollution. The paper substantiates the use of the situational modeling method as a way to build an information model of an event, and also formulates typical investigative situations that arise at the final stages of identifying such acts.
