Disengagement and engagement in the context of the educational process: an analysis of concepts

The article provides a retrospective analysis of the concepts of “disengagement” and “engagement” in philosophical and psychological contexts, which served as the basis for considering engagement of students as a form of overcoming their disengagement from educational and professional activities and an educational institution. In the context of the article, disengagement is considered as a person’s refusal of the opportunity to receive professional education and skills for implementation in the professional sphere and the use of their abilities. A review of studies is presented, which considers views on the formation of the phenomenon of engagement. Based on the understanding of the essence of disengagement, the transition to those categories that can and should be taken into account when considering the engagement of subjects of the educational process in the educational space is discussed. The prospects for studying student engagement in the educational process at the current stage of development of psychological thought are considered and analyzed.
