Впервые в отечественном литературоведении на материале повествований бывших рабов (конец XVIII- XIX вв.) рассматривается отношение афро-американских рабов к грамотности, в которой они справедливо видели путь к духовной и физической свободе. Создание «невольничьих повествований», ставших самым популярным жанром аболиционистской литературы в США и архетипом всей афро-американской литературы, явилось для их авторов новым шагом к интеллектуальной свободе.
