Geomagnetic field transfer into the magnetosphere tail

Free access

Two-dimensional stationary model of geomagnetic field transfer into the magnetosphere tail by plasma flow in a the plasma sheet is considered. The magnetic field transfer is modeled in the kinematic MHD approximation such that the plasma flow velocity is considered to be known function of x coordinate, and is defined on the basis of satellite data. Using numerical methods, the magnetic field configuration in the magnetosphere tail for different values of magnetic Reynolds number (Rеm) characterizing the effective electric plasma conductivity in the plasma sheet is calculated. The magnetic field distribution in the tail lobes which is consistent with measurements is shown to be derived in a narrow range of Rеm. The conclusion is made that if stationary state of the magnetosphere tail is to occur, the effective conductivity in the plasma sheet should adjust to characteristics of this state.
