The proposed text is a translation from English of the report of Archimandrite Maxim Constas at the International Conference “Digital Media and Orthodox Pastoral Care”, held on May 7-9, 2015 in Athens. Father Maxim’s report is devoted to the problem of maintaining care and attention to oneself in a digital culture. Referring both to the works of the fathers of the Church and to the studies of modern secular scientists and thinkers, father Maxim suggests that modern people need to fight for control over their attention, which is unprecedented in today’s conditions, not only in order to carry out a full- fledged Christian (primarily prayerful) life, but also as a necessary condition for preserving the inherent qualities of the human personality.
Digital culture, distraction, attentiveness, human personality, prayer, christian life
