The First Russian Explorer of Central Asia and the Heavenly Range: On the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Pyotr Semenov‑Tian‑Shansky

The article, timed to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Peter Semenov‑Tian‑Shansky (1827–1914), offers a survey of his expeditionary, scholarly, and state activities. The primary focus is on the scientist's journey to the Tien Shan in 1856–1857, which initiated systematic exploration of Central Asia and transformed the understanding of geography. Following this expedition, Russian geographical science evolved from descriptive earth science into an integrative discipline combining natural, historical, and socio‑economic knowledge. Drawing on the works of P. Semenov and his biographers, the author examines the expedition routes, the collection of geological and biological specimens, the role of local guides and military escorts, and the subsequent processing of data in Russia and abroad. The article highlights Semenov's multifaceted activities at the head of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society for over forty years, as well as his role in organising major national and international exhibitions (Nizhny Novgorod, St Petersburg, Paris, Chicago). His contributions as author and editor of fundamental encyclopedic publications are acknowledged, including Russia: A Complete Geographical Description of Our Fatherland, Picturesque Russia, and others. The article also covers his service as senator and member of the State Council, his contribution to the reform of statistical accounting, and the preparation of the first general census of the Russian Empire (1897). The scholar's scientific legacy includes materials related to his expeditions, reports regularly published in the Bulletin of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, exhibition publications prepared with his participation, as well as his memoirs and recollections of colleagues. It is emphasised that Semenov‑Tian‑Shansky's works and scientific achievements remain relevant today: the regularly held "Semenov Readings" in Lipetsk thematically encompass geography, demography, biodiversity, and the history of science. For the 2027 bicentenary, the Russian Geographical Society and the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences have organised a series of scholarly events that develop his integrated approach. The statistical methodology he developed still underpins Russia's socio‑economic monitoring, and his encyclopedias are unsurpassed models of comprehensive regional studies. Thus, the conviction of the celebrated Russian traveller that science must serve the "self‑knowledge" of the people and their practical needs has not only lost none of its relevance but, on the contrary, acquired new urgency in the era of global environmental and social transformations.
