The article examines the teaching careers of the greatest Russian Byzantinist scholars, professors of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and University: I. E. Troitsky, V. I. Lamansky, N. V. Pokrovsky, the tradition of interaction between representatives of church and secular science, which until 1917 was a single powerful stream of high knowledge, widely in demand by society. Attention is paid to the tragic fates of church historians in the post- October period (N. N. Glubokovsky, I. I. Sokolov, A. I. Brilliantov), as well as the social and scientific status of the researcher- liturgist N. D. Uspensky.
