The paper focuses on characteristics of Petrine epoch representation in the historical novel «Karl Veber” by B.A.Sadovskoy. The author notes the influence of Petrine epoch adventurous character on the main character destiny. It is revealed through the principles of author’s depicting a historic personality, namely Peter I is depicted through description of his own and his closest attendants' everyday behavior. Besides, there is an attempt to reveal the author’s understanding of Petrine epoch through the prism of laugh culture: the images of dwarfs, fools, fooling weddings and funerals. The paper emphasizes Peter's I tragedy, his loneliness, lack of understanding between the tsar and his ideas and thoughts successors. The paper attempts to reveal the author’s style: the use of symbolic images to depict Peter’s I world view, creation of «alternative history”.
