Among the high-risk groups for the development of invasive pneumococcal infections, patients with multiple myeloma (MM) have the highest rates of incidence and mortality due to the profound immunosuppression. The article presents modern data, as well as the results of original study of the clinical and immunological aspects of pneumococcal vaccination in patients with MM. The results of a prospective clinical study evaluating the effectiveness of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in patients with MM receiving bortezomib, lenalidomide, ixazomib are demonstrated. An independent protective effect of pneumococcal vaccination was observed, while the absolute risk reduction of pneumonias was 33.3%, and the number needed to treat (NNT) was 3.0, which indicates a high effectiveness of vaccination as a preventive measure. ClinicalTrials. gov Identifier: NCT03619252.
