Poetics of Joseph Conrad's novella "The secret sharer"

The article deals with the novella «The Secret Sharer» by Joseph Conrad, an English fin de siecle writer. His works lay the foundation for the development of a new type of novella. Conrad focuses on the general (ontolo-gical), not on a one-off (everyday life) event. A single event in his novellas helps us to find out the common laws of being. Tragedy is determined by complex interaction of personal and transpersonal. Conrad penetrates into deep psychological layers of human life, and raises difficult moral problems which his heroes strenuously solve
