Paul Virilio and the «flat earth» in the field of visibility: to the problem changes in the perception of space

This study was prepared in continuation of the work on the phenomenological disclosure of space [2] and addresses how in our perception it gradually flattens, narrows and loses visibility when it is not under the supervision of electrical devices. The article analyzes the works of Paul Virilio, whose articles, essays and manuscript dedicated to the “Measurement Crisis” have not yet been the focus of careful analysis. Focused on the speed of light and the migration of everything we've ever had tactile intimacy with into the universal form of digital bits, Virilio is concerned that the relationship with the environment is in decline. In parallel with this, the improvement of the transport system and the ability to get to any point in a matter of hours deprives us of faith in the incomprehensibility and enormity of the world. Therefore, the next decades will be associated with processes of relocation and clash of cultures, the outcome of geography and space itself, retreating before the canvas of time, the movement of which continues to increase. As a result, in Paul Viriglio’s concept three sectors can be conventionally distinguished: proximity and distance as orientation in space and connection with place; transparency and volume as conditions for the experience of presence and absence; limit and boundlessness as the experience of the perception of security.
