The article discusses the features of machine translation post-editing as a new and specific translator's activity being a response to the professional translation community to global changes in the world. While machine translation which is the translation of text from one natural language into another by a computer program no longer raises serious doubts about the need to use it to optimize the translation process, post-editing is only at the beginning of its way to find its place in the chain of actions for processing the source text and the translation text. Therefore, to show how logical it is to embed post-editing into the translators' work, this article describes the post-editing process for machine translation by comparing it to classic editing done by a human translator. Comparing these processes, we have identified seven parameters that characterize post-editing of machine translation: achieving a maximum result with a minimum of effort in a minimum amount of time, adherence to the terms of reference, working with two source texts, possible source text preprocessing, a central place in the post-editor's work and completeness of the process. . Based on these parameters, we have identified the skills that are important for post-editors to master, namely: understanding the specifics of postediting and the areas to apply it, performing various types of post-editing, processing translation text in accordance with the terms of reference, determining critical and allowable errors. To confirm the necessity of mastering these skills, we conducted an experiment with students-future translators or posteditors who performed machine translation and post-editing of technical text.
