Teaching Comparative Theology at the Revived Leningrad Theological Academy: A Case Study of the Lecture Courses of Professor S. A. Kupressov (1887–1965)
The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the content, pedagogical conception, and methodological apparatus of teaching Comparative Theology at the revived Leningrad Theological Academy (LTA) during the first post-war decades. The study is based on the handwritten and typescript lecture courses delivered by Professor Sergei A. Kupressov (1887–1965), preserved in the archives of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy. Employing source- critical, historicaltheological, and comparative methods, the author explicates a two-tiered model of teaching the discipline: the qualitative transition from a normative systematic seminary compendium to a problem- oriented historical- theological academic investigation is demonstrated. It is proved that the reception of the pre-revolutionary theological academic tradition in the post-war LTA was dynamic and selective, taking place at the personnel, bibliographic, and methodological levels. The article reveals the lecturer’s typology of Western Christianity centered around the Orthodox principle of sobornost (conciliarity): Protestantism is interpreted through the prism of religious subjectivism and its evolution from the Reformation to the crisis of liberal theology; Roman Catholicism is analyzed as a system of institutional hyper- centralization and juridism; Old Catholicism is viewed as a borderline phenomenon and a historical precedent for confessionally defined dialogue. Special attention is paid to the reactualization of V. V. Bolotov’s methodology and the reception of pre-revolutionary academic debates of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
