Portfolio technology as a way to assess education quality at school and university

The paper discusses the role of a portfolio technology in the educational activities of schools and universities. The traditional assessment and monitoring system does not always provide a fair and independent evaluation for educational institution activities. The research analyzes the data on structure and functions of portfolio available. Portfolio technology is regarded as an effective tool for improving education quality at school and university. The study substantiates the importance of the portfolio technology not only for school and university students but also for teachers and lecturers. The research identifies the aspects of applying this technology at primary, secondary, and high school by a case study of educational institutions in Yakutia in particular and the Russian Federation in general. A brief analysis of the Yakutsk citizens’ opinion poll results reveals the degree of parents’ satisfaction with education quality at schools and further education centers. A survey on the parents’ attitude towards portfolio proves a low awareness of this relevant educational tool.
